ActivityWilliam Irvine, M D (1743-1787), chemist, was the son of a Glasgow Merchant. He was educated at Glasgow University from 1756, studying medicine and chemistry under Dr Joseph Black, and was awarded an MD. He married Grace Hamilton and they had a son, William (1776-1811). In 1766 he was appointed a Lecturer in Materia Medica at Glasgow University, and in 1770 became Professor of Chemistry. Whilst working on improvements to glass-making he contracted a fatal fever. His son published Irvine's papers post-humously under the title, 'Essays, chiefly on Chemical Subjects' (1805).
