Person NameBonnyrigg and Lasswade Town Council; 1929-1975
ActivityUnder the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1929 (19 & 20 Geo. V, c. 25) Bonnyrigg burgh was merged with neighbouring Lasswade burgh, and a joint Town Council was created where previously they had been separate. The population of Bonnyrigg increased (although Lasswade became moribund) after the Second World War, because Lanarkshire coal-mines were worked out while those in the Lothians remained productive. By 1971 the population had risen to 7,102. Bonnyrigg and Lasswade Town Council was abolished in 1975 under the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 (c. 65). Its powers were assumed by Lothian Regional Council and Midlothian District Council. These in turn were replaced by Midlothian Council in 1996 under the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994 (c. 39).
