ActivitySir Isaac Bayley Balfour (1853-1922), botanist, was born in Edinburgh, the son of John Hutton Balfour, Professor of Botany at the University of Edinburgh, and Marion Bayley. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy and Edinburgh University graduating in 1873 with a BSc. He took part in an expedition to Rodriguez Island in 1874. Balfour was an assistant to Sir C Wylie Thomson, Professor of Natural History at Edinburgh Uninversity, 1875-1878, and one of Lord Lister's dressers, 1875-1876. He qualified as an MD in 1877. 1879-1884 he was the Chair of Botany, Glasgow University, and 1884-1888 he was the Sheridan Professor of Botany at Oxford.He married Agnes Boyd in 1884 and they had a son and a daughter. That same year he was elected FRS. From 1888 until shortly before his death in 1922, Balfour was Professor of Botany, Edinburgh University, King's Botanist in Scotland and Keeper of the Royal Botanic Gardens. Balfour was created KBE, 1920. His publications include: Botany of Socotra, 1888. He also worked closely with Clarendon Press, who on his advice founded the Annals of Botany (1887) a quarterly journal.
