ActivityAberdeen Public Soup Kitchen was founded in the harsh winter of 1800, the aim being to provide hot soup for the needy. In that year it received substantial donations, including the proceeds of a ball. It was refounded in 1827 at a meeting chaired by the Lord Provost in connexion with the Poors Hospital. Initially it operated from St. Mary’s Episcopal Chapel, but in 1834 it moved to new premises in what would later be St. Paul’s Street. In 1845, the facilities of the soup kitchen were used as an inducement to make poor children attend school. It appears still to have been functioning in the 1980s, though it may have been revived to deal with the homelessness problems of the late twentieth century.
