ActivityAberdeen Town Council purchased 832 acres at Hazlehead in 1920, from the estate of Donaldson Rose, merchant and shipowner. The property mostly consisted of farms, nurseries and market gardens, but the Council intended to put at least part of it to use in building housing and setting up a golf course. The rest became Hazlehead Park, with a number of attractions. Hazlehead Zoo was in place by the late 1960s when it was being marketed as good ‘indoor’ tourist attraction along with the Winter Gardens. It was run by Aberdeen and North of Scotland Zoologicial Society, who arranged lectures on the premises: the zoo also had birds of prey, deer, wildcats (representing Scottish wildlife), primates, wild dogs, reptiles, aviaries and domestic animals. Today only a few domestic animals remain, though the park is still popular with the public.
