ActivityJames A. Grant was born in Nairn, Highland in 1827. He was educated at Marischal College, Aberdeen, and joined the Indian Army in 1846. He was a brave soldier, receiving a medal after the Indian Mutiny in 1857 and others after the Abyssinian campaign in 1868. He accompanied John Hanning Speke (1827-1854) on his quest for the source of the Nile in the early 1860s, and though he was not with Speke when he reached his controversial goal, Grant took advantage of Speke’s early death in 1864 to publish his own account of the expedition, named ‘A Long Walk Across Africa’. He died in Nairn in 1892.
