ActivityAndrew O’Dell was born in 1909 and educated at King’s College, London, where he graduated with a B.Sc in geography. He held the post of demonstrator at the London School of Economics from 1930 to 1933, along with lecturer at Birkbeck College, London, from 1931 to 1945. During the war he was seconded to Naval Intelligence from 1941 to 1943, and then to the Department of Health for Scotland until 1945. At the end of the war he became lecturer and head of the Geography Department at the University of Aberdeen, progressing to Reader in 1949 and Professor in 1951. He died in 1966, leaving a number of publications on the geography and archaeology of the Shetland Islands, in which he took a particular interest, leading summer student expeditions and excavations there.
