ActivityThomas Smith was born in 1813 and began his career as clerk to John Baxter and then, in 1833, as managing clerk to Edward Baxter. He joined his father's business Henry Smith and Company, manufacturers and exporters, in 1836 and later became the senior partner of the company. In 1850 he was elected to the Town Council and subsequently held the post of bailie therein. In 1855 he returned to the council as Dean of Guild and was also appointed to the Harbour Committee. In 1859 he was made Vice-President of Dundee Chamber of Commerce and in 1860 President. He provided two stained glass windows for Dundee Royal Exchange and was involved with the Albert Institute to Dundee. He was Deputy Chairman of the Savings Bank, Director of Dundee Royal Infirmary, Director of Dundee High School, Director of Dundee Industrial Schools, Director of Dundee Orphans Institution, Trustee of the 'Mars' Training Ship, Vice -President of Dundee Institution for the Blind, Vice-President of the Dundee Young Men's Christian Association, Vice-President of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Honourary President of Sabbath School Teachers' Union, Director of Dundee, Perth and London Shipping Company, Director of the Scottish American Trust companies and subscriber to the Financial Reform Association. Thomas Smith died in on 7 August 1885.
