ActivityThe Guild Court, an executive arm of the Guildry Incorporation, was presided over by the Dean of Guild. The Court controlled trade and commerce and sanctioned any demolitions, erections or alterations of property within the burgh boundaries. It sought to maintain the quality of new and existing buildings and to protect the burgh inhabitants from the dangers of unsound or ruinous buildings. By the late eighteenth century many functions of the Guild Court had been absorbed into the Town Council and undertaken by the Magistrates Court. However, the Guild Court in Dundee differed to that of other major burghs in Scotland because, following a dispute in 1813 over the inadequacy of proposed improvements to the Harbour, it reconstituted itself and exercised independently from the Town Council.
