ActivityJ Hyslop Bathgate & Co was established in 1886 by John Hyslop Bathgate (1847-1934). The business occupied the premises of Ladhope Free Church from 1886-1990. During the 1950s-1970s the firm also occupied a first floor flat in Botany Mill, Roxburgh Street, Galashiels. In 1990 the firm was renamed John Bathgate & Co and moved to Forest Mill, Dunsdale Road, Selkirk.John Hyslop Bathgate took Robert Reavely into partnership and on Bathgate's death, in 1934, Reavely became sole owner. James Brown (1909-1992) joined the firm in the early 1930s as a traveller, and approached Reavely with a partnership offer which was turned down. In 1947 Robert Reavely sold the business to James Brown and Herbert Jack, with effect from the 1 January 1948. Jack left the partnership in 1973, taking with him the contract with Vardoc Fabrics Ltd, and continued to act as their agent. In 1977, James Brown's wife Winifred Brown joined him as a partner in the firm. In 1986, shortly after the firm had celebrated its centenary, it was transferred to the ownership of Margaret H Smith and her son, Mark J Smith, with Mr Brown remaining a a consultant until 1987.
