Title | Guidance notes regarding transfer of unclaimed bodies to medical schools for anatomical examination |
Date | 14 August 1919 |
Extent | 2 leaves |
Description | Notes prepared by Norman Walker, H.M. Inspector of Anatomy for Scotland for the guidance of Local Officials (Medical Officers of Health, Superintendents of Asylums, Inspectors of Poor and others) outlining procedures to be followed upon bodies becoming available for disposal to medical schools.
The Inspector of Anatomy was informed of a death and advised to which centre the body be sent. The informing 'Agent' (Medical Officer, Superintendent, etc.) completed a Medical Certificate and official written Notice, which was sent to the Inspector of Anatomy. Within 48 hours of the death and 24 hours of the written Notice being issued, a local undertaker was commissioned to undertake funeral arrangements, transfer the coffin to the railway station and oversee its despatch to the centre selected by the Inspector of Anatomy. Any expense incurred in the process was met by the medical school receiving the body. |
