Administrative History | The General Strike of 1926 began with disruption in the coal industry and became general with the involvement of other industries, including road and rail transport, building, printing and iron and steel. The miners stayed out for six months, but the general strike lasted only nine days. |
Source | These papers were sent to the library by Charles Harry Clinton Pirie-Gordon (1883-), of Buthlaw, journalist and genealogist. Harry Pirie-Gordon was working at The Times in 1926, and thought the library would have difficulty in obtaining copies. Pirie-Gordon was born on 12 February 1883, and educated at Harrow and at Magdalen College, Oxford. He worked for ‘The Times’ in London from 1912 to 1914 and again from 1919 to 1939 after service during the First World War. He was editor of "Burke's Landed Gentry" from 1930 to 1936. The Gordon family had acquired Buthlaw, Aberdeenshire, in 1664. |
