Administrative HistoryFrederick II was renowned as an enlightened monarch and a francophile, more enclined to playing music than playing the soldier. However, Frederick led the Prussian forces during the War of the Austrian Succession, during the Seven Years' War, (1756 - 1763), and in the campaign of 1778, not only as king but also as military commander in the field.

John Drummond of Logiealmond, Perthshire, entered the Prussian service under his kinsman, Field Marshal James Keith, and became aide-de-camp to Frederick II in 1750. He died in 1776. Several letters by Frederick to him were formerly preserved at the mansion-house at Logiealmond but were lost before 1868.
SourceGeorge Stewart (1798 - 1847) of Grantully presented the letter to the Principal of Marischal College, Aberdeen, in 1838. Stewart was Drummond's grandson.
