Administrative HistoryJohn Black was born in Mortlach, Banffshire. He graduated from King's College, Aberdeen, MA 1855, where as an undergraduate he had won the Simpson Mathematics Prize. After a period as schoolmaster at Banchory Devenick, Kincardine, he became an Inspector of Schools in Scotland. From 1868-1881 he was Professor of Humanity in the University of Aberdeen. He was awarded an LL.D by the University of Glasgow.
