Creator NameAberdeen Fish Salesmen's Association (1896 - )
Administrative HistoryThe Aberdeen Fish Salesmen's Association was established on the 28 Apr 1896 to represent the interests of fish salesmen in the area and to implement and administer uniform conditions of sale. Since it was the practice to sell catches on a system of credit, paying for the purchases the week after the agreement, the Association also oversaw this system, making decisions on who was deemed credit worthy on the basis of members' wide local knowledge.

The first president of the organisation was Peter Johnston, with Thomas Dawson as the first vice president. Its scope of responsibilities and influence changed little over the decades of the twentieth century. During the Second World War it worked closely with the Ministry of Food and was fully involved with the wartime system of price control.

The administration of the Aberdeen Fish Salesmen's Association was dealt with by the Aberdeen Fishing Vessel Owners organisation from 1974 until 1989. Since then it has been administered by the Aberdeen Fish Producers' Organisation.
