Administrative History"On the 23rd of February 1531 Gavin Dunbar Bishop of Aberdeen founded an hospital at Old Aberdeen close by the cathedral gate, for the support of twelve beadsmen giving to them £100 Scots belonging to him out of the rents of the Burgh of Aberdeen. The Deed of Mortification and Charter by the bishop constituting this benefaction is not amongst the title deeds of the Hospital [but is recited in the Royal Charter of foundation, MS 3861/2/1/10]. The bishop's chaplain in the south aisle of the cathedral and his successors were to be directors and conservators of the hospital, and the dean and chapter with consent of the director were to have the right of appointing the beadsmen. This charter was confirmed by King James the Fifth on 24th February 1531." (Bain)
