| Description | Letter from David Skene to [his father], Andrew Skene, in which he describes meeting Mr Hunter who promised to let him know if any 'Capitall' operations were being performed; Hunter's ticket costs 4 guineas; he states that he prefers Hunter's lectures to Monro's as he has a greater variety of preparations, speaks well and takes more pains to have things understood, he describes the topics as if he is informing himself rather than the students and allows everyone to handle the preparations; Monro however makes a greater number of practical observations than Hunter; he describes meeting Dr Munkly who allows him to attend his hospital when he likes, without paying, and has promised to let him know when operations are performed; all the physicians he has met have advised him to go to Smellie for the theory of midwifery, Skene expects to get practical experience of this in Paris, October 1752. |
