| Description | Letter from David Skene, Edinburgh, to Andrew Skene (his father) in which he states he has settled in lodgings 'without the Pater-row Port, a few doors beyond Andrew's old house, where we could not be supplied'. Willie Gordon and he have each got a little snug boxed room for 2 shillings the first week as a trial then for 18 pence if they stay through the winter. The family is Mrs Bridges with two daughters for servants; he dined at an ordinary for 6 pence and designs to continue it; he met Lady Balnacraig, who is in good health and spirits, and Mr Monro and Dr MacFarlane. He describes Mr Monro as an 'easy, merry, chearfull man' and remark that he begins his lectures on Monday, the rest begin on Tuesday, 'They are all publick for 8 days so I shall attend most of them'. He has been wandering the city and bought a new hat, 1 November 1751. |
