| Description | Letter from David Skene to John Ellis in which he remarks that he had heard that the pennae marinae were on their way including one specimen for him and one for the Duchess of Portland; he requests that Ellis present it to her with Skene's 'respectful compliments' and offers to procure whatever he can obtain for her museum; he understands that he should expect some plates of sponges and discoveries in fruitification of conservas and chides Ellis for it remarking 'is it not that rather too much of the bargaining style. Indeed my friend, I want neither spur nor bribe, but always freely communicate to you whatever I imagine can any way contribute to your entertainment'; he remarks that the weather continues cold so he has been unable to take many sea side walks; he requests Ellis to ask Dr Solander if 'Albin's insects colour'd, price three Guineas' is worth getting; he asks if Ellis can recommend a good hygrometer; he is pleased with Linnaeus' 'experiments of smut' which will perhaps throw some light on the disease which is not well understood; he begs to know when Pallas' book can be obtained and asks if there is anything in Baster's '3rd Opus'; Teans is now in town preparing for another excursion, 12 February 1767. |
