DescriptionLarge red-leather bound family bible. In the inside front pages are recorded by Rev. Mr. Cumming key events in his life, particularly the births of his children. The full text of this section is transcribed below:

'Wednesday Feb'r. 14. 1827 died my dear mother about three months after the birth of my younger brother Hercules. A.E. 40 Rev. XIV.13.

Monday March 9th 1835 died a beloved father in the land of the strange but in the home of his son after a protracted illness A.E. 54. He left Aberdeen to visit me in October 1834. He was carried back and laid in the grave of his wife my mother in St. Nicholas Church yard Aberdeen. Job III.17 v. 1 the soul, IV.13, 14 & 18.

Called to S. C. Crown Church July and ordained to office of Holy Ministry by Rev'd the Presbyter of London. September 28 1832 A.E. 24 - Copresbyters Rev'd. J. Brown, Rev'd Dr. Crombie, Rev. N. K. Taverdie, Rev. J. Macdonald, Rev. J. Millar.

2. Married by Rev. Gordon D.D. of High Church Edinburgh to Elizabeth daughter of James Nicholson ???? sq. London at the house of Mr. ???? 5 Annandale St. Edinb. August 6th 1833.

This day Friday July 18th 1834 was born Lettice Anne daughter of Rev. J. Cumming M.A. & Elizabeth Cumming, 1/2 past three afternoon. - J Cumming.
Sabbath August 31st 1834 Lettice Anne Cumming was baptized by Rev. J. Crombie D.D. Minister of St. Andrews Scotch Church Commercial Road - church reopened after repairs. J - Cumming.

This day Sabbath Sept. 6th 1835 was born John (named after my departed Father) at 78 York Road Waterloo Bridge Parish of Lambeth. - J. Cumming
This day Sabbath 27th Sept'r 1835 was baptised by the Rev. Dr. Crombie at Scotch Church Crown Court John.. - J. Cumming

This day Tuesday 20th June 1837 at 1/2 past 7 P.M. was born Fanny third child and daughter of Dr. J. Cumming. N.B. on the morning of the day William IV died and Victoria proclaimed Queen.
This day Sunday July 23 was baptized Fanny by Rev. Dr. McCulloch, Parish Minister of Kelso N.M. - J. Cumming
Fanny died August 14th 1839 after 12 months' lingering illness

Louisa Finch born Friday Nov. 23 1838 10 oc'k PM fourth child.

Nicholson born Friday May 8th 1840 12 PM - fifth child.

Baptised by the Rev'd Dr. Brown at 7 Hunter St.
Died Feb'y 22nd 1842.

Martin Luther born April 13th 1843 seventh child.
Baptised by the Rev'd Dr. Brown at Scotch Church Crown Court.

James born September 1st 1844 1/2 10 PM eighth child.
