TitleReviews of 'Anatomy of the Human Body'
Date1959 - 1969
Extent1 folder
Custodial HistoryApparently sent to Hamilton by the publishers: a covering letter from the Advertising Manager of J. B. Lippincott Company [the textbook's American publishers] is enclosed.
DescriptionReviews of the first (1959) and second (1965) editions of 'Anatomy of the Human Body' published in the 'Lancet' (1959); 'British Journal of Surgery' (1959); 'British Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery' (1959); 'Science' (1959); 'Journal of Medical Education' (1959); 'Condon Hospital Gazette' (1959); 'The Journal of the Kansas Medical Society' (1959); 'Oxford Medical School Gazette' (1960); 'Bulletin of the Johns Hopkins Hospital' (1960); 'Diseases of the Colon & Rectum' (1960); 'Modern Medicine' (1960); 'The Physical Therapy Review' (1960); 'The Anatomical Record' (1960); 'Anesthesiology' (1961); 'Postgraduate Medical Journal' (1966); 'The Indian Journal of Medicine & Surgery' (1967); 'Guy's Hospital Gazette' (1967); 'Nursing Mirror' (1967); 'The British Medical Students' Journal' (1967); 'St. Thomas's Hospital Gazettte' (1967); 'The Ulster Medical Journal' (1967) and others. Comments focus principally upon the volume of illustrations in the book and their careful integration within the text. Many also make particular note of the chapter on the nervous system.

In connection to the dispute about authorship (see MS 3750/1/7), the review from the 'Lancet' (1959) appears to assign most of the credit to Lockhart: 'Professor Lockhart's book'.

Also included is a copy of an article from 'Durrant's' 'The News' (February 1969). The article, entitled 'Fareham Girl Gets Into the Picture', refers to a girl who took a photograph of her brother 'engrossed in a book about human anatomy' - the book in question was 'Anatomy of the Human Body'.
