Administrative HistoryHenry Oswald Jackson Collier (1912 - 1983), industrial pharmacologist. In 1958, Collier joined Parke - Davis at Hounslow as Director of Pharmacological Research, and remained there until 1969. Collier spent his last six years as director of the Stoke Court research laboratory of Miles Laboratories Ltd. In 1982, he finally retired and returned to academic work as an Honorary Professor of London University at Chelsea College, where he set up and directed a research unit to study the mechanisms of drug dependence. Cited from Collier's obituary, 'The Times' newspaper, 2 September 1983.
DescriptionMost correspondence in the file was written whilst Collier was based at Parke-Davis and Company, Hounslow, Middlesex, 1963 - 1969 and Miles Laboratories Ltd., 1970 - 1981. However, two letters date from his retirement, when he took up the position of Visiting Professor at Chelsea College, London, 1983.

Includes a copy of Collier's obituary in 'The Times' newspaper, 2 September 1983.

Correspondence, relating to the sending, to Kosterlitz, of samples for scientific experiments. Also relating to the exchange of respective reprints & articles and discussing their respective research, work and experiment results.

Includes a copy of the abstract of a communication on the subject Collier intended to give at the 'Symposium on the Interaction of Drugs with Receptors', April 5 - 8 1965, held at the School of Pharmacy, Chelsea College of Science and Technology: H. O. J. Collier, 'Lability of Receptors and the Genesis of Drug Dependence'.

Letters, dated September - November 1967, mention Kosterlitz's cataract operation.

Correspondence, dated September 1967 - January 1968, relates to Kosterlitz's visit to Collier, which he made when he attended the Pharmacological Society meeting at St. Thomas' in January 1968. Correspondence relates to other visits Kosterlitz made to Collier.

Correspondence, dated January - March 1968, mentions the 30th Annual Meeting of the Committee on Problems of Drug Dependence at Indianapolis, and informs Collier and Cyril Schneider about what was said. Correspondences mentions other Meetings of the Committee on Problems of Drug Dependence.

Correspondence relates to the 'Satellite Meeting on Agonist and Antagonist Actions of Analgesic Drugs', held 19 July 1969 in Basel, which Collier organised.

Includes a letter, dated 19 June 1969, from Collier to Dr William A. Allen, Assistant Dean of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada, saying that Collier wishes to withdraw his interest in the possible appointment of Chairman of Pharmacology at the University of Saskatchewan.

Correspondence, dated May - June 1970, relating to a grant for a student at Aberdeen. Includes a copy of the 'Co - operative Award in Pure Science', which the 'Science Research Council' gave Kosterlitz in 1970.

Correspondence from 1970 - 1971 mentions the 'Aberdeen Symposium', which Kosterlitz organised. Letter, dated 20 November 1970, from Collier mentions his heart attack.

Letter, dated 8 August 1971, from Collier to Dr Julian E. Villarreal, The University of Michigan, Department of Pharmacology, talking about the party given by Prunella Scales, which Collier and Patience [?his wife] attended. Letter mentions, 'Hans telephoned me yesterday about an editorial meeting in Aberdeen at the end of October. I hope we shall all three be able to meet there then ... According to my notes and to my discussion with Hans on the telephone yesterday, I will be editing the section in which your paper falls; but you will be editing your joint paper with C.B. Smith'. Letter enclosed with a copy of Collier's report for 'Nature' on the Symposium - 'Narcotics Antagonist Activities'.

Includes a draft copy of a typescript of H. O. J. Collier, D. L. Francis & C. Schneider, 'Modification of Morphine Withdrawal by Drugs Interacting with Humoral Mechanisms: Some Contradictions and their Interpretation'.

Correspondence, dated July - August 1976, relates to the VAT reclaim and receipts for accomodation and meals supplied to members of the Miles Laboratories Ltd. attending the INRC [International Narcotics Research Club] meeting in Aberdeen, between 19 - 22 July.
