Correspondence, regarding the exchange of reprints, and Cairnie's and Kosterlitz's respective research and work. Mentions meetings annual general meetings and other meetings of the Physiological Society.

Handwritten letter, dated 10 November 1961, from Cairnie to Kosterlitz, mentioning the building works at the Institute of Cancer Research, Royal Cancer Hospital. Also, letter describes what life is like at the Institute.

Letters, dated 10 July 1962 (from Cairnie) and 23 July 1962 (from Kosterlitz), relate to Kosterlitz's visit to Cairnie.

Handwritten letter, dated 9 March 1964, from Cairnie to Kosterlitz, wondering whether Kosterlitz could find a job for Lee. Letter is annotated with 'Phoned ? meet on 20/3 Physil Soc' in ?Kosterlitz's hand.

Letter, dated 14 September 1964, from Cairnie to Kosterlitz, saying that he is 'hoping to spend a year from August 1965 in San Francisco working on cell kinetics in the laboratory of Dr. Harvey M. Patt. I shall work on the kinetics of Paneth and goblet cells in the small intestine using some new techniques I am teaching myself for obtaining better sections'. Includes a reply letter from Kosterlitz, dated 3 October 1964.

Correspondence includes undated document [probably 1964 - 1965] from Cairnie entitled 'Biophysics', reporting on his most recent research and work on the 'study of the population kinetics of the cells lining the small intestine'. Cairnie writes, 'In addition to the columnar cells there are present in the lining layer of the small intestine small numbers of goblet cells, enterochromaffin cells and Paneth cells. Little is known of the precursors of these cells or their turnover rate. These problems will be examined using appropriate autoradiographic and microscopic techniques during the year to be spent working with Dr. Harvey M. Patt in the University of California'.

Handwritten letter, dated 24 February 1965, from Cairnie to Kosterlitz, asking him if he could write another letter in support of Cairnie receiving a Fulbright Travel Grant. Letter mentions that Cairnie 'got the appointment at the University of California'.

Handwritten letter, dated 31 August 1966, from Cairnie to Kosterlitz. Mentions issues of employment.

Short correspondence, dated April 1968, mentions Kosterlitz's move from his department in Marischal College to Department of Pharmacology, Foresterhill. Cairnie asks for Kosterlitz's opinion regarding an application from a student who terminated a Ph.D. programme in 1967 under Roy Postlethwaite.

Correspondence includes a letter, dated 31 May 1979, regarding the enclosed draft transcript of A. B. Cairnie, 'Hypothesis. Naloxone and Naltrexone are Potent Anti - Emetic Drugs for Radiation - and Motion - Sickness'. Also mentions the, 'first patient will receive naloxone prior to his radiation treatment to - morrow in Toronto!'. Includes Kosterlitz's reply, dated 6 July 1979.

There are a number of gaps in the correspondence: between July 1962 and January 1963; 1962 and 1963; 1964 and 1966, with letters dated 24 February and 8 March 1965. Also gaps between 1966 and 1968; 1968 and 1974; 1974 and 1979.
