DescriptionThe correspondence is in English and German.

Correspondence relating to their respective research, work and scientific results; the sending of samples for scientific experiments; the exchange of reprints and their respective manuscripts.

Includes a letter, dated 28 October 1971, from Herz, saying that Kosterlitz might be asked to act as a referee on Herz's scientific work.

File includes a copy of Candace B. Pert and Solomon H. Snyder, 'Opiate Receptor: Demostration in Nervous Tissue' from 'Science', 179 (1973), 1011 - 1014.

File includes copies of three letters, one dated 17 November and two dated 19 November 1976, from Seymour Ehrenpreis, Professor & Chairman, University of Health Sciences, The Chicago Medical School, to Dr. D. de Wied, Rudolf Magnus Institute for Pharmacology, Utrecht [Editor of the European Journal of Pharmacology;
the Director [Herz himself], Max - Planck - Institut fur Psychiatrie;
and to Eddy Leong Way, Professor and Chairman, Department of Pharmacology, University of California [President of the American Society of Pharmacology and officer of the 'International Narcotic Research Conference] respectively.
Letters say that Herz and Dr Rudiger Schulz deliberately ommitted all mention of Ehrenpreis' and his colleagues' work in their recently published paper in the European Journal of Pharmacology. According to Ehrenpreis' letter to the Director, 'In my opinion Drs. Herz and Schulz should be severely reprimanded for this dishonest and highly unethical behavior. They should be compelled to take whatever steps are necessary to try to rectify the damage done to me and my colleagues by their false claims of priority. This was no honest mistake but a deliberate attempt to take the credit for something that did not belong to them and this calls for some kind of action to prevent this from happening again'.

Also copy of letters, dated 24 November 1976, from Herz to Way and Herz to de Wied, denying Ehrenpreis' accusations and providing his opinion and explanation about the matter. Herz's letter to de Wied says that if the matter received public attention, de Wied should consult scientists not directly involved, including Kosterlitz. Letter, dated 24 November 1976, from Herz to Kosterlitz, relating to Ehrenpreis' accusations.

File includes a letter, dated 23 December 1980, from Herz to Kosterlitz, enclosing copies of two letters, one from David Bousfield, Staff Editor of 'Trends in NeuroSciences' (TINS) and the other from Dr. M. Wuster, Max - Planck - Institut fur Psychiatrie respectively. The letters relate to the rejection by TINS of Herz's and colleague[s]' manuscript, which was on multiple opiate receptors and entitled 'Heterogeneity of Opiate Receptors in Peripheral Tissues'.

File includes a letter, dated 21 August 1983, from Dr. Moneim Attia, Kuwait University to Kosterlitz, asking Kosterlitz to send reprints or photocopies of publications on the possible role of Enkephalins and Endorphins in temperature regulation and heat strain. Also asks Kosterlitz to send addresses of people who are working in this field.

File includes a copy of Charles J. Weitz, Kym F. Faull & Avram Goldstein, 'Synthesis of the skeleton of the morphine molecule by mammalian liver', from 'Nature', 330 (1987), 674 - 677.

Letter, dated 31 October 1989, from Herz, asking Kosterlitz to contribute a chapter to the Volume on Opioids for Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology. Correspondence, dated November 1989 - December 1991, relate to this subject. Includes a copy of the 'Articles of Agreement for Contributors to the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology' with Springer - Verlag GmbH & Co. KG., Berlin Heidelberg. The 'Articles' are not signed by Kosterlitz, but have been signed by Springer - Verlag et al. Also includes a typescript copy of H. W. Kosterlitz, 'Introduction. Aspects of Opioid Research'.

There are a number of gaps in the correspondence in the first file: between November 1969 and July 1970; July 1970 and October 1971; October 1971 and August 1974; August 1974 and December 1975; November 1976 and November 1977; November 1977 and June 1978; June 1978 and December 1980; January 1981 and August 1983; 1983 and October 1989; September 1990 and January 1991; and March - December 1991.

First [original] file annotated, '1/10/81 Reprints & manuscript extracted from this file and passed to Professor Kosterlitz, on his instructions'.

The second file contains papers relating to a symposium on Advances in Opioid Research which was held in honour of Herz in Ringberg, 2 - 5 July 1989. It includes a commemorative programme and Kosterlitz's slide list for the lecture that he gave. Correspondence dates from January 1988 and includes four different typescript copies of H. W. Kosterlitz's lecture 'Opiate Receptor Subtypes: Past, Preseent and Future'. Also includes correspondence with Springer - Verlag, Berlin Heidelberg, a handbook for the symposium and a colour postcard of 'Schloss Ringberg' [Castle Ringberg], which was where the symposium was held.

Second [original] file with slighly different spelling of Herz, 'Albert Hertz: Advances in opioid research. 2 - 5 July, 1989; Symposium'.
