Administrative HistoryFrom 1928-34 Kosterlitz was research assistant in the Department of Medicine, University of Berlin. He joined the University of Aberdeen in 1934 as assistant to J.J.R. Macleod (d 1935), Regius Professor of Physiology, and remained here until his death in 1996. He rose to the position of reader in the Department of Physiology, 1955-68, and subsequently became Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmacology, 1968-73, and latterly, Professor Emeritus and Director of the Unit for Research on Addictive Drugs. His early work focused on clinical radiology, galactosemia and nutrition, but it was through his later research on the autonomic nervous system and narcotic drugs he achieved worldwide acclaim. His discovery in 1975, of encephalins earned him fellowship of the Royal Society in 1978, and revolutionised research into the effects of addictive drugs on humans. He won many awards for his work:

Custodial HistoryFollowing Kosterlitz's death in 1996, his papers remained in the Department of Physiology, University of Aberdeen. They were removed to the custodianship of Special Libraries and Archives in 2001, following a Physiology departmental move from premises it had occupied since the 1930s. Personal papers were returned to the family home following his death and some of these were subsequently deposited in Special Libraries and Archives.
