Administrative HistoryThe Educational Institute of Scotland (E.I.S.) was founded in 1847 and is the oldest teaching union in the world. A Royal Charter was granted to the E.I.S. by Queen Victoria (1819 - 1901), which allowed the union to confer the degree of ‘Fellow of the Institute’ amongst other privileges. The E.I.S. is the only union which has this power. Membership at the time the charter was granted was over 1,800 and in 2000 the membership was over 51,000. The aim of the union was to promote higher standards in education throughout Scotland and over the years has developed the function of improving the working conditions and pay of teachers. The E.I.S. has been affiliated to the Scottish Trades Unions Congress, the Trades Union Congress and Education International since the 1970s.
SourceThe records of the Association were deposited on indefinite loan with Aberdeen University Library in May 1997 by the Secretary, William A. Ross, through the offices of the Scottish Working People’s History Trust.
DescriptionPapers of the Educational Institute for Scotland, Aberdeen Local Association, including records of accounts, 1917 - 1986, minutes, 1975 - 1986, Management Committee minutes, 1975 - 1986 and the minute books of the Modern Languages Section of the Aberdeen branch, 1920 - 1976. The collection also includes financial statements, annual reports, comments on leaving certificate papers and related papers of the Modern Languages Section, 1958 - 1969.
