| Administrative History | The Educational Institute of Scotland (E.I.S.) was founded in 1847 and is the oldest teaching union in the world. A Royal Charter was granted to the E.I.S. by Queen Victoria (1819 - 1901), which allowed the union to confer the degree of ‘Fellow of the Institute’ amongst other privileges. The E.I.S. is the only union which has this power. Membership at the time the charter was granted was over 1,800 and in 2000 the membership was over 51,000. The aim of the union was to promote higher standards in education throughout Scotland and over the years has developed the function of improving the working conditions and pay of teachers. The E.I.S. has been affiliated to the Scottish Trades Unions Congress, the Trades Union Congress and Education International since the 1970s. |
