Administrative HistoryThe first electrified line was opened in 1899 and in 1900 a parliamentary Bill granted assent for the conversion of other routes. The electrification programme was cost-saving in the long run but in 1901 opposition was raised that the city could not afford the scheme. It was successfully completed by late 1902 and by 1903 only 2 horses were still being serviced on tram cars.
