TitleLetter from Mackenzie Fraser (on board 'HMS Canopus') to Major Missett
DateApril 21st 1807
DescriptionComplaining of the inaccuracies of his statements concerning the disasters, which seem to have followed all the advice that he had tendered, 'Viz'. Lack of any warning about the danger to be expected from marauding Arabs at Caravansera; erroneous advice about the reaction of the local population both in Alexandria and, most importantly, in Rosetta; heavy pressure to make the second attack based largely on his assurances that famine in Alexandria was just around the corner; and inaccurate interpretation of the Mamelouk's intentions, all of which had put the General in a great predicament, which might well lead to a retirement from Rosetta if not to an evacuation from the country altogether
