Administrative HistoryMajor W. Leith-Ross was born in Meerut, India in 1884. He was educated at Wellington College and then the Royal Military College at Sandhurst. He received a commission as second lieutenant before joining the 2nd Battalion, North Staffordshire Regiment in 1904 and serving in India.

During the First World War he served in France and Belgium with the Ferozepore Brigade and with the 57th Wilde's Rifles.
