Creator NameAlexander Kilgour (c 1800 - 1874), physician and author.
Administrative HistoryAlexander Kilgour MRCS (1926) graduated from Marischal College, Aberdeen, MA 1821, MD 1833. After completing his medical training he became physician and clinical lecturer at Aberdeen Infirmary, and from 1839 - 1849 was lecturer in medicine in King's College, Aberdeen. He received an honorary MD from King's College on his resignation from that post in 1849, and after the union of King's and Marischal Colleges in 1860, he served for twelve years as one of the General Assessors in the University Court. He was a long-standing member of Aberdeen Medico-Chirurgical Society and author of many works, including 'Lectures on Ordinary Agents of Life as Applicable to Therapeutics and Hygiene: the Uses of the Atmosphere, Habitations, Baths, Clothing, Climate, Exercise, Foods, Drinks, &c. in the Treatment and Prevention of Disease' (Edinburgh: Black, 1834).

Custodial HistoryThe papers came to Dr J.M. Shewan from Miss J. Murray who had received them from a friend of the Kilgour family called Miss Sinclair. It is believed that most of Dr Kilgour's papers have been destroyed.

[sic], n.d., and Aberdeen Medico-Chirurgical Society, n.d.; newspaper cuttings re. his resignation from the post of physician and clinical lecturer at Aberdeen Infirmary, n.d.; and obituary notices.

Photocopies of Fishtown Cove Rent Book, 1878; household expense accounts, 1872 and 1886; and licence for male servants, carriages and armorial bearings, 1892, have also been deposited, the provenance and location of which originals are unknown.
