DescriptionLetter from Amelia Nyasa Laws, Hotel Beau Site, Chamonix, Haute Savoie, France, to her relatives, regarding journey to Chamonix; joined by Miss Forster Walker and Mr. and Mrs. Piggott; the Piggotts are to go to England; Selby Brock is on sick leave; Mrs. Brock has spoken favourably of his wife but this might be policy, and Dr. Brock has not been so generous; she is a judge's daughter but a Wesleyan, which does not suit the Brocks; Miss Forster Walker had 12 valises and bags; Uncle wishes to die before he becomes like her; the French are calm and brave in facing another year of war; settling Miss Forster Walker into a coupe-lit with their own 2nd. Class compartment next door; Uncle glad that he was not travelling with them; Miss Forster Walker had sewn her passport into her dress and it had to be unpicked; an extra tax at Turin annoyed her; copious paperwork on the journey; Miss Forster Walker's patriotic habits; her insistence on having all her bags with her instead of in the van; they include an empty cardboard box and an empty Huntley & Palmer biscuit tin; she has beautiful faith but it can be irritating applied to railway and boat timetables; boat trip over the Lac de Bourget to the Abbey of Hautecombe, the private property of the King of Italy; beautiful place, inhabited by Capuchins; Aix is very pleasant though war is having its effects; Annecy is in the neutral zone because it is under the protection of Switzerland; the French Evangelical Service is sustained there by the Geneva Committee; she is already helping as organist; Professor Allier, Professor of Theology in Paris, is to take the services in August; the hotel is well-situated; already they are benefiting from the change of air; the milk is delicious; awaiting the arrival of Uncle.
