DescriptionLetter from Amelia Nyasa Laws, 7 Via Venti Settembre, Rome, to her relatives, encouraging short and frequent letters; mention again of Karonga; friendly letters from Frau Wedekind, Fraulein Albrecht (whose brother has been interned) and Herr and Frau Pfannstiehl, with news of two of the choir boys receiving Iron Crosses; Herr Richter's son has volunteered; the church is crowded for every service; news of the Pfannstiehl children; Mme. B.'s sister has died after dreadful suffering; more deaths amongst their German acquaintance; Mrs. Curtiss has died; Mr. Haas of the Hôtel Beau Site went temporarily mad and his wife died while he was in a sanatorium; hotels are closing all around; Italy will join the war in February or March against Austria and Germany; government still divided but people still against Germany, and Germans will have to leave; silver teapot worn out and having to be replaced with Aunt's one; difficult to get at it as Oscar meddled with the locks on all the trunks; Uncle has another chill (from seeing the funeral of the Visconti Venosta) and Aunt is tired; Uncle's visit to old Mr. Fotheringham; confusion over re-arranging funerals because of his illness; Aunt cold after having to attend another funeral; nursing both of them; Uncle is not fit to have an operation.
