DescriptionLetter from Amelia Nyasa Laws, Aviemore, Crieff, to her parents, marking the anniversary of the declaration of war, timing of the performance of a cantata in Crieff, remarkable synchronising of call-up papers, even in the islands, visit of Dr. Henderson and discussion of church unification, performance by the band of the Black Watch, Miss Henderson had been a V.A.D. at Perth Hospital and had interesting accounts of her experiences, bad relations between Belgian and British patients, 'Happily ignorance of each other's language prevented complications', the nurses given credit for improving the men's characters, plans for a new dress suitable for wear at Gryffe Castle, made of a piece of pre-war silk cashmere from Valence about which Aunt Amy must not know, the French 'say it requires an Englishwoman to wear a tailor-made style because it requires her character to carry it!', discussion of selling bicycles, as Aunt will never ride hers again, Amelia's a 'beautiful St. Vincent', but Aunt's Ralegh has 'the fixed wheel, long out of date, would make it impossible to sell later', better to sell in Crieff as though outdated the frames are in excellent condition, discussion with the auctioneer about his war experiences in Italy and France, like others he wishes Britain had been invaded to shake it up, he and his two sons returned home unscathed, his scorn for cowards, hopes of meeting the Dalys but peace celebrations make travel difficult, Mr. Daly is to do Foreign Mission Presbyterial work in Invernessshire, the Valence pastor has recommended she write to the paster, M. Putry, at Strasbourg, for information there, letter from Soeur Ludovic, a month since they had a letter from Nyasaland.
