Date1 July 1917
Extent2 sheets
DescriptionLetter from Amelia Nyasa Laws, Aix-les-Bains, to her relations, regarding meeting with M. Baradat, who did not turn up, and with Dr. Muller, who had not been warned of her coming; Dr. Muller says his staff is complete; he is hostile until he reads Dr. Jacod's recommendation, as all the Red Cross ladies have been disposed of in Aix as they caused so much trouble, several of the Red Cross hospitals have been closed and the military hospitals accept no foreigners as volunteers; there are fewer wounded in Aix because the offensive has been further west; she has the 'semi-offer' of a post at the International if the expected German offensive at Verdun causes the arrival of many more wounded; the ladies at the Bristol were very polite but made it clear that no massage was required; this, from a sight of the wounded, was clearly untrue; she is distressed that the situation is so hopeless even though she could be doing good; M.Baradat says that if Dr. Muller does not want her there is nothing to be done; she sees a Bristol conspiracy in keeping her out, and thinks it is a result of the war having gone on so long that the contribution of individuals can no longer be appreciated; her visit to the Bristol reminds her of her stay there; visit to Mme. Blanc, widow of Dr. Léon Blanc who persuaded Pierpont Morgan to fund the municipal hospital; she is director of the smaller Léon Blanc hospital, which has a kindly atmosphere; she has a full staff but recommended that Amelia write to Mme. Brachet, president of the Union des Femmes de France, as she is setting up a staff at Chambéry; this Amelia has done; she is worried that the situation is liable to misconstruction in Rome if Uncle is questioned as to her activities.
