Date4 June 1916
Extent3 sheets
DescriptionLetter from Amelia Nyasa Laws, 7 Via Venti Settembre, Rome, to her relatives, regarding the Daylight Saving Bill; complaints of elderly people and others who do not understand it; Dr. Fairweather was a hopeless tourist and expected Uncle to do all the guiding; Uncle is very tired after it; British sightseers lack thoroughness; dreadful scirocco; the storms have not made the air fresh; Aunt is suffering badly from it; her circulation suffers; she needs to get away; the house is ready for the summer; Dr. Fairweather is to study the situation at Leghorn this weekend and Uncle will go there tomorrow; he wants to propose Uncle as Cuningham lecturer in the College; Professor Denny is first in line and there are other candidates, too; Uncle, however, appreciates the incentive for working up his own lectures; Maria is to visit the zoo; Aunt and Amelia are to go on ahead to the Alps; the Bible Society work is overwhelming for Uncle but he exaggerates the problems; Uncle is finding excuses to stay in Rome; Guido Rossi is going to the front; Uncle can do his final round of visits himself, for Aunt is not up to it; Miss Jazdowska is going to Florence to be looked after by Mrs. Brock [There were Jazdowskis associated with teaching and art in Aberdeen: James Bronislas Jazdowski, son of John, teacher in Aberdeen, graduated from Marischal College in 1856 and according to an annotation of the Search Room student list died in Rome in 1902]; Amelia has declined work at Grasse because of the scirocco; the Château d'Oex project is still more attractive; Mr. Sutherland knows Dr. Roux and will do what he can to find work for Amelia, though Swiss volunteers will have preference; the other possibility is still the British Legation at Berne; the depot there sends bread and clothing to prisoners in Germany - they have developed a special bread that keeps fresh for a fortnight; this is funded from home but is more efficient than sending bread from home; some posts are paid ones, and others are voluntary; she has written to Mrs. Grant Duff, wife of the minister to the Swiss Government; illness of Mrs. Dawes Rose - pleurisy as the result of a draught in the gas office; her daughter has had to be sent for and took 22 hours to travel from Lausanne, though she had no trouble on the way; she was improving but is worse now from drinking a glass of champagne; the Bentons have returned from Nettuno; Hale Benton was arrested there, ostensibly for the maid showing a light at night, but a conspiracy is still suspected; Mrs. Benton is proud of the fact that her baby has sunburn.
