DescriptionLetter from Maggie Gray [probably at Miss Pennycuick's, 26, High Street, Galashiels], to Robert Laws, regarding shut shop and general celebration of cheap train to Edinburgh, beginning with bells at 5 a.m.; slight confusion over school registers with Mr. Cramond; determined not to ask for help with them in case of being laughed at; Mr. Cramond friendly; asks her if she has made friends but she says she has no intention of it; results of pupil teacher examinations; official opening of the Free Library by Mr. Trevelyn, the M.P., accompanied by the Masonic body and speeches and banners; walk up the hills alone, as Miss Milne had gone to Kelso; beautiful landscape; chose not to go the banks of the Tweed by herself; surprised to find post office shut at 9 p.m.; newspaper report of the East Parish Church in Aberdeen being burned down; long walk through park and to the Edinburgh road; letter home; asking about his exams; preaching of Mr. Pollock; he looks delicate; baptism afterwards with names of four children given; the evangelists Daniel and Hill to preach that evening.
