DescriptionLetter from Maggie Gray, Miss Pennycuick's, 26, High Street, Galashiels High, to Robert Laws, regarding writing letters; Mr. Stewart the clerk asking if she would take a girls' evening class during the week, which would bring the fees and a Government grant into the hands of the school; the clerk is resigning; he is to ask the Chairman of the School Board for a clock for the schoolroom; sorting out her luggage; no cabs in Galashiels so having to employ a busman to move the luggage; visit by Miss Spence, the previous teacher, and by Miss Milne, her erstwhile landlady; difficulty with two men in her compartment; trying to find out about county from them; protection from other passengers; Miss Pennycuick is a milliner, assisted by Miss Jessie, while Miss Jeannie keeps house for them; headache caused by rough journey; magnificent scenery; the old school depressing to Miss Spence but Miss Milne dwelling instead on proposed new buildings and full staff; roll of 86, brought down deliberately from 130 to exclude pupils from outwith the burgh; Miss Spence to move nearer her relations but previous teacher did not stay long either; invitation to tea at Miss Spence's on Sabbath evening, though her brother Robert had warned her about people being too kind at first; service in 'the most handsome U.P. Church I ever entered'; admiration for the young preacher's sermon but regrets that he was not the married Mr. Pollock; service at the Free Church in the afternoon to hear Mr. Smith preach, the son of Dr. Smith of Edinburgh; another good sermon; having to end quickly; several schools and ten churches besides meeting houses in Galashiels; assistant aged 13 helps her in school and hopes to be pupil teacher.
