| Administrative History | Frederick Wood Jones, anatomist, embryologist, anthropologist and medical educator, was born in London on 23 January 1879. After graduating B.Sc. (1903) and MB BS (1904) from the University of London, he took up a number of short term medical and research posts in Britain, Egypt and Australasia.
In 1912 he was appointed Professor of Anatomy in the London School of Medicine for Women and from 1920 - 1926 held the same position in the University of Adelaide. From 1927 - 1930 he was Professor of Physical Anthropology at the University of Hawaii, but in 1930 returned to Australia, where he was appointed Professor of Anatomy in the University of Melbourne. Whilst in Melbourne he continued his prolific writing on anthropology, turning his attention to aboriginal anthropology. He returned to England at the end of 1937, becoming Professor of Anatomy at the University of Manchester (1938-1944) and then the first Sir William Collins Professor of Human and Comparative Anatomy at The Royal College of Surgeons, London.
He died 29 September 1954. |
