| Administrative History | Dr Elizabeth Crosby, one of America's pioneer female scientists in neuroanatomy, worked with Lockhart during her sabbatical year from Ann Arbour University in the University of Aberdeen's Anatomy Department, October 1939 - June 1940. They became great friends and maintained a regular correspondence throughout their lives, punctuated by infrequent meetings at international medical conferences and seminars.
At her invitation, Lockhart attended the annual meeting of the American Anatomical Association at the University of Kansas, 1967, and presented a paper on Dr Frederick Lanchester's work on 'Directional Fixivity and the Transitory Visual Impression or Fleeting Image' to the Anatomy Symposium at the University of Alabama Medical Center (subsequently published in the 'Alabama Journal of Medical Sciences'.) Dr Lanchester's research for this paper was undertaken at the University of Birmingham Medical School, whilst Lockhart was Professor of Anatomy there. The two men collaborated on this and other research.
Towards the end of her distinguished academic career, Professor Crosby held the concurrent positions of Professor Emeritus of Anatomy at the University of Alabama Medical Center and Professor Emeritus of Anatomy and Consultant in Neurosurgery at the University of Michigan Medical School. In her nineties, she was presented with the National Medal of Science by President Carter at the White House, USA, on 14 January 1979. |
