TitleTwo nostalgic letters from Alexander James Edward Cave (b 1900), anatomist, to Lockhart
Date1985 - 1986
Extent2 letters
DescriptionLetter from Professor A.J.E. Cave, thanking Lockhart for the photocopy of his chapter, 'Man and Nature', in 'Ways of Living' (Hodder and Stoughton, 1926) and for the reprint of Lockhart's 'Reply' to his retirement portrait presentation, 22 May 1985. Cave comments favourably upon the portrait: 'Gunn caught his sitters to the very life'; appreciate's Lockhart's reference to Low's gentle diffidence as teacher and examiner; is surprised to learn that Struthers was such a tyrant; mentions poor health: 'Myself am severely handicapped by arthritis in spine feet and hands ... [but] top end still functioning, though, and unfinished papers increase the while - that they'll never see either completion or publication is immaterial - their composition is its own satisfaction. Am entertaining some heretical views about the splienoid - but doubt whether the modern 'anatomist' would be interested let alone understand'

Letter from Cave to Lockhart, 6 March 1986, discussing research interests pursued in despite of failing health and reminiscing over early career and membership of the Anatomical Society.
