The Centre was at this time considered unique in Britain, bringing together for the first time, a district hospital, nurses home, auxiliary scientific medical and administrative services and a medical school as a single unit. It was opened by the Duke of Gloucester on the 14 July 1938. The scheme had been started 13 years prior, with over one million pounds raised in voluntary contributions. Lockhart made significant contributions in the planning and design of the medical school.
