He resumed his medical studies for the full academic session 1917 - 1918 and undertook a short period of home-based service, late 1918 -early 1919. He was de-mobilised in October 1919 with the rank of surgeon lieutenant.

During his time in the Navy, Lockhart took a great interest in the cases that he encountered and the places that he visited. His observations from this period are well preserved in a series of letters to his parents and small collections of photographs and holiday souvenirs. He incorporated his reminiscences into his academic and public lectures, and souvenirs collected at this time, particularly relating to the landscapes and people of the Mediterranean, continued to provided illustrative material for these talks throughout his working life.
