| Administrative History | John McBean, the eldest of a family of six, emigrated from Scotland in 1902, and worked as a farm labourer in Manitoba, Canada, until 1903 when he became a journalist. He worked on 'The Farmers' Advocate and Home Magazine' and later for the 'Nor'West Farmer', until his death in 1906.

| Source | The papers were given to the library by John MacBean, Inverness, in 1984. Born in 1913 at Ardclach, Nairn, the son of a farmer, John MacBean graduated BSc (Agriculture) from Aberdeen University in 1937. He served in the Royal Navy Wireless Branch from 1941 to 1945. He became Principal in succession of Kersewell Agricultural College, Carnwath, from 1953 to 1960; Balmacara Agricultural School, Kyle, Rossshire, from 1961 to 1965; and Lawmuir Agricultural College, East Kilbride, from 1965. He retired in 1974. |
