Administrative HistoryThe Secretariat of the Medical Women's International Association was located in Vienna until 1979/80, when its staff announced their wish to retire. Member countries were invited to submit suggestions for a new Secretariat location, to be selected by the Association's Executive. Bristol was selected in July 1981, however anticipated difficulties over staffing of the new office resulted in a lengthy debate and led to disagreements amongst members.

The Medical Women's Federation was involved in this discussion as it was one of several member bodies with a casting vote on the decision. Office-bearers, past and present, appear to have held positions in both organisations.
