Administrative HistoryIn September 1927, Mary Esslemont embarked upon a world tour that took her through Europe, Asia, the Pacific Islands and North America, returning to Britain in the summer of 1928 (probably July - August). During her trip she wrote regular letters to her mother in Aberdeen, describing the places and people that she visited. Although travelling alone for much of the time, she appears to have broken her trip with planned visits to family and friends, who acted as guides for local sights. At other times she stayed in a variety of accommodation, ranging from hostels to some of the best hotels. On her outward journey she sailed on the steamer R.M.S. Orvieto - a letter card with photographs of the ship and its interior is included in the letters to her mother, described below.
DescriptionTravel journal for Mary Esslemont's 'World Tour', February - June 1928 (incomplete); letters from Mary Esslemont to her mother (and occasionally, other family members), September 1927 - June 1928. Notes and letters from friends visited during the trip are interleaved with her correspondence.
