Administrative HistoryThroughout her life, Clementina Esslemont was a champion of liberal ideals and good causes. In recognition of her long-standing commitment to charitable work and her many contributions to society, she was awarded the O.B.E. in 1939 and an honorary LL.D. from the University of Aberdeen in 1941.

One of her principal achievements was the foundation of the Aberdeen Mother and Child Welfare Association in 1909, which played an important role in social service and public health provision in the City of Aberdeen until the creation of the Public Health Department in 1949. She was also involved in the establishment of a model block of tenements on the Spital, Aberdeen, in the formation of Aberdeen Lads' Club, St Katherine's Club, and the nursery school movement.

Her several public appointments included Justice of the Peace, and membership of the Committee of the School of Domestic Science, the Aberdeen Endowments Trust, the Maternity Hospital Committee, the Vigilance Association and the local Education Authority.
