| Administrative History | Mary Esslemont attended Aberdeen High School for Girls and in her senior school years also appears to have attended classes at Robert Gordon's College.
She completed three undergraduate degrees in the University of Aberdeen. She was admitted to the University's medical degree programme in 1910, but postponed her medical studies until 1919, in order to work concurrently towards the degrees of BSc and MA, which she was awarded in 1914 and 1915, respectively. After a short period working in England and as an assistant in the University, she resumed her medical studies, graduating M.B.Ch.B. in 1923. Courses undertaken for her BSc degree permitted her direct entry to the second year of the medical degree programme.
During her medical degree, she was elected first female president of the University's Students' Representative Council. Reminiscences from this period are included in her lectures and addresses (MS 3179/6). She was also Vice-President of the University Debating Society, 1921-1922. |
