Creator NameWilliam Cameron (1751–1811), poet, was educated at Marischal College, Aberdeen, where he was a pupil of James Beattie, with whom he later continued to correspond. Having been licensed a preacher of the Church of Scotland, he was ordained minister of the parish of Kirknewton, Edinburgh, in 1786. In 1780 Cameron published anonymously Poems on Various Occasions.

Manuscript, 16 pages. A longer version of the poem in MS 30/52/2, with footnotes, unsigned and undated. On the first page a note in Beattie's hand: "I wrote to the Author & requested him as delicately as I could not to publish this",
