Administrative HistoryElizabeth Montagu [1720-1800] She met Dr Gregory in 1766, and he introduced her to Beattie's Poems on Several Subjects, which she admired. Beattie met her in 1771, during his visit to London, and they remained close friends until her death. She was an active promoter of Beattie's advancement and she became his principal adviser on literary matters. His final collection of poems was dedicated to her in 1784
DescriptionLetter from Elizabeth Montagu, Sandleford, to Mrs Arbuthnot, Peterhead, explaining her late thanks for Arbuthnot's letter; mentioning Arbuthnot's account of ?James Hay Beattie's health and her reluctance to write to James Beattie. Letter talks about the good weather, its effects on such things as the animals; and contrasts it with current and international affairs. Letter talks about Mr Montagu's business in the North; her intended visit to London and asks Arbuthnot if she requires any ?article of furniture from London. Letter talks about the Montagu's good health. Montagu writes 'Please to enclose ?your letter to Mr Montagu Sandleford near Newbury Berks'.
