Administrative HistoryMiss Elizabeth Carter, Deal.
DescriptionLetter from Mrs Elizabeth Carter, Deal, to Mrs Elizabeth Montagu, Sandleford, talking about the rain; saying that she has not yet read Sir George Staunton's [Sir George Leonard Staunton, first baronet (1737 - 1801), physician and diplomatist] work, but will have it in circulation from the Book Society. Letter talks about Lady Kingsborough's 'Calamitous Situation' and mentions and praises the Sovereign's actions. Carter writes that four Deal boatmen have been taken prisoner and carried to Dunkirk and Calais and that one came back with an account of the diet in a French prison: "A man was allowed only a quarter of a pound of meat for two days. The Bread seems to be made of straw, & was so hard that it could not be eat till it had be soaked in water. Do not you think this diet would be very wholesome for some of our English Admirers of French Government? It is pity but all, who prefer it to their own, should go & try". Carter sends her compliments to Mrs M. Montagu and Mrs E. ?Herey.

Addressed 'To Mrs Montagu Sandleford Newbury Berks'.
